Tom Wegener Surfboards
The Australian pioneer behind the revival of wooden boards and finless alaias.

Tom Wegener has done more than anyone to bring wood back to the heart of modern surfing. Based on Australia’s Sunshine Coast, this shaper-researcher revived the alaia — the finless board inherited from ancient Hawaiians — and opened a whole generation to a freer, quieter kind of glide.
His paulownia boards, light and alive, look like nothing else. They ask you to forget thruster reflexes and rediscover pure rail glide, where it’s the body and the water that make the turn, not the fins.
Beyond the alaia, Wegener explores sustainable wooden builds that question the footprint of a surfboard. Patient, auteur work, against the grain — exactly the kind of practice UWL keeps alive in Europe.
